Democrat John Barton Runs Against Harry Schooley in 1976 as Lee County Tax Appraiser
Just Politics

John Barton Vs Harry Schooley

John Barton, a 54-year-old Windsor West apartment owner in Fort Myers is running for LEE County Appraiser. Barton, says he’s running on Schooley’s record, a record Barton claims is fraught with unequal land assessments. Barton, a former airline pilot and civil engineer who smokes cigarettes through a plastic filter, also has carried a 1966 appeal court decision with him to campaign rallies and quotes from the decision that ruled Schooley over-assessed property owned by a Lee County realty firm. Barton’s favorite portion of the ruling is a paragraph, written by one of the judge’s on the Second District Court of Appeal in Lakeland, which says, “It seems apparent from the record that the tax assessor’s conduct in the assessment of the plaintiff’s property amounted to unjust discrimination against the plaintiff, forcing it to pay a disproportionate share of the tax burden of Lee County.” Schooley has ignored Barton’s recital of the court ruling and appeals to voters via two letters written by appraisal firms praising Schooley’s administration.

An Early Lead

Appraiser Schooley Reelected

With 103 precincts reporting, Schooley had polled 35,995 votes to Barton’s 24,003 or 58 percent of the votes opposed to Barton’s 41.9. votes opposed to Barton’s 42.4. The 75-year-old Schooley jumped to an early lead over Barton, a 54-year-old Fort Myers apartment house owner, former airline pilot and civil engineer. Schooley, who became property appraiser in 1960 when the job title was tax assessor, is secretary of the Florida Republican party. Throughout the campaign Barton had attacked Schooley’s method of assessments.

A Transformation

Luxury Adult Condominiums

The successful rental apartment complex was transformed into a thriving adult condominium community in the late 1970’s. Constructed before the rise in inflation that significantly increased construction and land costs, these delightful condos in an excellent downtown location were offered at prices unparalleled at the time – offering a 2-bedroom, 1-bath apartment for only $29,900. Given the low cost and desired location, they were sold quickly. A fun highlight in the local advertisement was the city bus service stops directly at your doorstep, so residents have the option to go without a car.
